Nature of Impermanence – nothing in life is ever permanent
The life we lead is constantly changing. Everything we ever experience is only temporary...
I remember when I read those words for the first time. A sense of sadness washed over me, knowing that everything I’ll ever live and experience in life is here to stay only for a short while.
Hearing those words when feelings of happiness and satisfaction are elevated can feel somewhat crushing and daunting. We want to stay with those feelings forever. But knowing they will pass, can create a sense of disappointment within.
It’s natural to seek a sense of stability and desire for the experiences to be permanent. Change and uncertainty can feel stressful and scary. To recognise that everything that begins must also end isn’t always easy. But there is great wisdom in the view that everything is ever-changing, nothing is ever permanent. This is not just true in human lives, but also in nature. It’s a reality that governs every corner of the universe.

The universal law of impermanence is one of the fundamental principles that rule our lives. It teaches us to be aware of the fact that everything we encounter in life is fleeting, and nothing will remain the same forever.
It is a reminder that we should accept change as a natural part of life, and not try to cling to things that can eventually be taken away from us.
The nature of impermanence serves as a reminder to live in the moment and enjoy each and every experience for what it is. This awareness can help us appreciate the beauty of life and all its precious moments, instead of taking them for granted or resisting change. Becoming aware of the impermanence can help us to fuel our passion to savour and relish the wonderful moments of joy, happiness and fulfilment we experience every day.
It’s understandable to fear change, but there’s so much to be gained by accepting impermanence, rolling with it and even seeing the beauty in it. Rather than viewing the experiences as inevitable, we can see them as the precious gift that they are. It can give us the strength and courage to live our lives with purpose and intention, no matter how uncertain or momentary life may be. In this way, the law of impermanence can help us find peace and contentment within ourselves.
Mindfulness empowers us to understand that it’s not the nature of impermanence that causes us to suffer, it’s our desire for things to be permanent that causes us to suffer.
By understanding that everything is temporary, we can learn to accept the changes that come our way and make the most of each moment. This can help us find strength and resilience even in the midst of difficulty, moments of sadness, anxiety or even a loss. It's for moments like these where accepting impermanence can help us to cope more easily with trying times.
When we accept that the circumstance, situations and experiences in life are not permanent, we start to live with gratitude and awe for the present moment, without worrying about what may or may not happen in the future. In this way, we can live life to its fullest potential and experience joy no matter what comes our way.
At the same time, however, it is important to remember that while everything in life is temporary, we can still make meaningful and lasting connections with others and create lasting memories by appreciating every moment as it passes.
By embracing the impermanence of life, we can appreciate each experience for its own unique beauty and value, and enrich our lives in the process. We can open ourselves up to greater peace and joy in life by learning to accept change and make the most out of each moment. Ultimately, this can help us find true contentment within ourselves and enjoy life for all it’s worth.
So if you want to live life to its fullest, take a moment to pause and reflect on the universal law of impermanence. Be mindful of the transient nature of life, and remember that everything is temporary.
Accept change as it comes, and make the most out of every moment you are given. Appreciate each experience for its own unique beauty, open your mind to reality and find deeper fulfilment in your life. Because everything you see all around you will one day be gone. Therefore, allow yourself to appreciate every moment you are given to see, hear, smell, taste, live and experience.

I think you’ve captured it perfectly - that impermanence can evoke both feelings of joy and sadness. It’s hard to accept sometimes - but living mindfully can help us along the way I think.
P.S. I really enjoyed your about page, and spot some similarities ☺️ This year marks 20 years since moving to the UK from Poland. I also had my son at a similar age to you - at 22! I look forward to reading more ☺️
